This session at AASA was held to inform superintendents about the opportunities to advance environmental education in school systems. This session was hosted by the Superintendents’ Environmental Education Collaborative. The Collaborative is an historic opportunity to facilitate an ongoing conversation between Superintendents and partners from environmental organizations to leverage ESSA as well as information from colleagues to expand environmental education and environmental literacy efforts to create robust, real-world learning experiences that bolster STEM learning, civic engagement, and prepare students for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century workforce. The Superintendents’ Environmental Education Collaborative sponsored an immersion field trip to investigate climate change in New Orleans through a bus and swamp boat trip guided by Ultimate Swamp Adventures. Leaders traveled by bus to Westwego, LA and boarded a swamp boat to experience their world class ecosystem that is threatened by sea level rise. School system officials and environmental educators gave briefings on programs aimed at turning daunting challenges of the 21st century into jobs and opportunities. By bus, superintendents traveled to the Lower 9th Ward of the city, the area hardest hit by Hurricane Katrina which is still struggling to recover. Upstream Alliance hosted this field trip with Superintendent Anne Campbell, Project Learning Tree, North American Association for Environmental Education and the Galveston Bay Foundation.
